Alert Bus Driver Rescues Crying Baby Wandering Barefoot Near Milwaukee Freeway

A Milwaukee bus driver rescued a barefoot baby boy running alone near a highway, clad only in a onesie in freezing temperatures.

Irena Ivic, a driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System, was stunned when she saw a young child running barefoot down a highway overpass on the morning of December 22. Surveillance video from the bus shows Ivic's view of the boy as he ran over a freeway overpass.

Ivic stopped her bus, ran across the street and picked up the child.

As Irena called for help, a passenger gave up her coat to help keep the baby warm.

The MCTS said in a statement that the baby was unharmed.

Ivic was presented Thursday with an award by county officials for her act of kindness.

NOTE: Police first said the baby was a boy but later clarified that the child is actually a girl.

The video also shows Ivic, driving her bus as normal, then suddenly stopping it, as she spots the child wandering close to the road.

"She did a lot more than her job".

While Ivic waited for authorities to respond to the missing child, he fell asleep in her arms. He said he believes his wife, who he said has a mental illness, took the baby to the church just across the freeway and forgot about her. Officers later reunited the toddler with his father.

"[The] baby was so scared, and cried", Ivic, a mother of two, explained during the MCTS award ceremony yesterday, published in full by ABC-affiliated news outlet WISN.
