Craig Brewer to Direct Coming To America 2, Eddie Murphy Returning

Eddie Murphy is returning to the big screen with the long-awaited sequel to Coming to America, and the film has finally found its director.

Eddie Murphy played an African prince on the hunt for a wife in NY in Coming to America.

This is insane! According to Deadline, Eddie Murphy is set to reprise his role as Prince Akeem for a sequel to the 1988 classic Coming To America!

Black-Ish's Kenya Barris is now re-writing a script by the original writers of Coming To America, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Brewer (who recently directed Murphy in the forthcoming Dolemite is My Name) will be working from a script which was rewritten by Kenya Barris (the Black-ish creator who recently scored a huge development deal with Netflix) from a draft by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, the writers of the 1988 film.

Murphy confirmed the news Friday, saying that he was "thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward", according to Entertainment Weekly.

There is no production or release date for the "Coming to America" sequel.

"In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son, and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda".

Apparently numerous original characters will return as well, including Arsenio Hall as Akeem's assistant Seemi, Shar Headley, whom Akeem found in New York, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who depicted Akeem's father the king.

Brewer is repped by WME and attorney Carlos Goodman, and Murphy is WME, ML Management and Ziffren Brittenham's Matt Johnson and Skip Brittenham; Barris is CAA, Artists First and attorney Gregg Gellman.

The hope is to start filming sometime in 2019, which would be welcome news to both fans of the original and Murphy himself, who has been trying to get the film off the ground for a while.

"He never fails to blow me away", continued Barris. "He is a true auteur and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board".
