New Mercedes-Benz CLA is a real beauty

Unveiled alongside the new, tech-enabled 2020 CLA Coupe at CES 2019, the smartwatch will be a Mercedes-Benz-branded Vívoactive 3 Global Positioning System. Mercedes-Benz claims that the CLA continues to have the same drag coefficient of 0.23 as before. The German company will be hoping for similar success with the latest generation!

For its initial launch in the USA, the all-new CLA only gets one engine option for the meantime. This means a decoupled multi-link axle at the rear and the Direct-Steer system as standard. While the A-Class only gets multilink rear suspension on the all-wheel-drive model (the front-drive models with wheels smaller than 19 inches are saddled with a torsion-beam design), all CLA-Class models will have multilink rear suspension. To that end, the new CLA uses the latest iteration of the MBUX infotainment system, a twin 12-inch screen system that debuted on the A-Class at CES past year. The rear of the auto features narrow tail-lights created to make the vehicle appear even wider. The all-new CLA-Class shares the same wheelbase as the all-new A-Class sedan and hatchback.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Class measures 48 mm longer, 53 mm wider and features improved interior space over the outgoing model. Boot capacity, interestingly, is down ten litres to 460.

The only model mentioned by Mercedes-Benz in their press release was the mid-range CLA 250. Engine outputs are 225 hp and 350 Nm of torque, transmitted to the wheels via a 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes performance arm AMG is also working on a range-topping CLA 45 model, featuring the most highly tuned, 421hp version of the M260 2.0-litre petrol engine.

More engine options as well as an all-wheel drive configuration will be available once the all-new CLA-Class officially goes on sale.

The biggest change is inside though.

The new 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is a tech-heavy, style-centric sedan with a more potent turbo-4 and the automaker's latest infotainment system.

It works the same in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Class as it does in the A Class. The MBUX uses artificial intelligence to customize the driver's experience and can adapt to the user, Mercedes says.

It also no longer gets confused by vehicle occupants conversing, Mercedes claims. Flip a "v" at the centre console and MBUX will also access a personal favourites menu.

Paring the MBUX with another Mercedes premiere at CES, the Benz-branded Garmin vivoactive 3 Global Positioning System smartwatch will make for a driving experience like no other, promises the carmaker.

The customized wearable is able to track your health data, including your heart rate and stress levels, and send that information to the car's dashboard.
