Mourinho rules out return to management at Benfica following Man Utd sacking

Last week, Benfica sacked coach Rui Vitoría after three and a half seasons at the club, during which he won two league titles, one cup title, two Portuguese super cups and one league cup.

Mourinho said he was happy at being linked with a return, but prefers not to be talked about in public about when out of work.

He said that: "I am his friend".

He said: "I have never been into the game of feeding news stories, but I have no intention of working in Portugal".

"If I were, Benfica would be the first to know my decision". 'I am fine at the moment.

"The best way to respect a great club [Benfica] and a great president is to say that I was not approached".

The Portugal tactician got fired after his side were thrashed 3-1 by current table toppers Liverpool earlier in December.

Since they did just that things have improved immeasurably for the Red Devils, with interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer winning five games out of five (four in the league) and bringing a feel-good factor back to Old Trafford in the process.

Thankfully for him, he can go wherever he wants, because it has emerged that he officially received his pay-off from Manchester United in the form of a £15 million compensation package, immediately upon his sacking.

"It's a tremendous honour when you return to a club where you've been, but I'm talking to you and I will not talk to anyone else".

Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira will meet with Jose Mourinho in the coming days to discuss the ex-Manchester United coach's conditions to take charge at the club, according to Portuguese daily A Bola.

"If any professional - a manager or a player - is wanted by a former club, it means we did something positive", he told Correo da Manha.

His record speaks for itself and various new job opportunities have been mooted since he became available to take charge at a new club.
