His contract with the Packers still has another year, meaning McCarthy can sit out the 2019 season, collect a sizable paycheck and start preparing for the hiring cycle in 2020.

It's finally official. The Jets have named former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase as their next head man. ESPN's Jeff Darlington was the first to report the hire. He was sacked by Miami in late December. It's been previously reported McCarthy that McCarthy will be picky about his next coaching job and wouldn't be averse to sitting out the season if he didn't find the flawless fit.

Gase served as the offensive coordinator in Denver and Chicago before being hired by the Dolphins, where he spent three seasons.

The Dolphins went 23-25 during Gase's tenure.

Bringing in a once failed head coach should mean that ice is that much thinner, and the only lifeline for Maccagnan will be immediate success for Gase which he did experience in Miami when he went 10-6 in year one.

The Jets finished last season with a 4-12 record.

According to Breer, Gase is expected to hire Dowell Loggains as offensive coordinator.

McCarthy was reportedly heavily interested in landing the Jets' job. Earlier this week they announced Matt LaFleur was taking over as head coach.
