Apple AirPods Likely to be Revamped with New Features in 2019

These are to sport an "All-new design" and could arrive as a replacement for the first gen AirPods (not the 2019 version).

The analyst also didn't mention AirPower, Apple's long-awaited wireless charging mat that has reportedly been rife with problems.

Also noted in the report is the suggestion of a completely redesigned pair of AirPods that will be released sometime in 2020.

In short, AirPods appear to be yet another Apple product that was mocked early on before going on to becoming a legitimate success.

According to Kuo, the new charging case will come with component upgrades which will cost a bit more than usual to manufacture, raising its costs up to 60%, which we can expect to see reflected in the price.

The Verge noted that if previous rumors turn to be true, the next AirPods could also have water resistance and noise cancellation features.

The current AirPods' carrying case is charged only with a standard Lighting cable, but the new product will have new components and hinges, redesigned to withstand higher thermal requirements. However, Kuo believes that the AirPods will include Bluetooth-related updates.

These won't be the same AirPods, though, and Kuo - who has a peerless record in predicting Cook & Co's movements - says that there will be at least two revisions in the next couple of years. Unfortunately, Kuo didn't provide any details about the next-generation AirPods. He claims that the AirPods are Apple's most popular accessory of all time, and suggests that the number of units sold will likely rise from 16 million in 2017 to more than 100 million by 2021.

The latest analyst report from Ming-Chi Kuo comes weeks after Apple updated a trademark filing in Hong Kong and Europe that referenced its wireless earbuds.
