'Agents of SHIELD' Renewed for Season 7

Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, made the announcement Friday that the Marvel series would continue for another abbreviated 13-episode season, on the heels of the upcoming 13-episode sixth season.

The trade magazine theorized that the renewal has happened now in order that the network can pick up the cast options, which are in the offing.

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be getting a seventh season.

The news comes as a surprise, since season 6 was rumored to be the final outing for team.

"We'll never end something without the potential for more story", Tancharoen said ahead of the season 5 finale earlier this spring, which she and Whedon had written to double as a series finale.

While not a strong Live+same day ratings performer, S.H.I.E.L.D. has excelled in on-demand viewing.

Ming-Na Wen, famous as the voice of the title character in Disney's 1998 film Mulan, stars as Melinda "the Cavalry" May, a weapons expert and ace pilot at S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, has averaged a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and continues to see success in the global market.

ABC is also developing a Marvel project with "Wonder Woman" scribe Allan Heinberg that will focus on female superheroes.
