Danny Welbeck injury overshadows Arsenal Europa League progress

Emery continues his quest for a fourth Europa League title on Thursday evening when Arsenal host Sporting Lisbon in the second of back-to-back matches against the Portuguese giants.

Welbeck suffered the injury in the first half of the group stage fixture, with the score locked at 0-0.

The Arsenal forward's career has been plagued by injuries, and this could be the worst of the lot. It's clear that we are with him in these minutes.

"He was working well and he was having a good match", said Emery. "He had some chances too".

"When one player has an injury like that, every player on the pitch they look at this injury". They saw it was a big injury.

"Then the players concentrated on the match and we forgot".

"Now he is at the hospital".

Welbeck was making his sixth start under Emery this season and was being linked with a January move. He helps us with his quality and capacity.

"This injury is very big for him, for us and for everyone".

The game only really opened up in the 88th minute when Jeremy Mathieu was shown a straight red for a foul on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the striker raced through on goal.

The incident knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails but Welbeck's replacement Aubameyang hit the crossbar as the visitors offered very little in terms of an attacking threat.

Yet a 15th game unbeaten for Unai Emery's side at least assured them of European football after the turn of the year with two group matches left to seal top spot.

He added: "Our mind is to be first in the group". "We think [they are] serious injuries". He works with us a lot and expects a lot and he knows what he wants from us.

"We were aware of the opponent's quality but we, knowing our capacity and being creative and aggressive with and without ball, could try to surprise here".
