'Half a dozen' injured in shooting at California bar

Initial reports indicated that a man had opened fire with a semi-automatic gun at about 11.20pm.

There has been a mass shooting at a Californian bar, according to United States media reports.

A sheriff's captain said at least six people were shot late Wednesday when a suspect opened fire in a crowded Southern California bar.

It has not yet been revealed the extent of the injuries.

Police told the Los Angeles Times that at least 30 shots were fired at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 60km west of Los Angeles.

Pictures and video footage show firefighters and first responders flooding the scene after multiple injuries were reported.

One witness saw the suspect tossing smoke bombs in front of the restaurant before watching a security guard get shot.

The Times reports that there were multiple reports of shots fired and people hit.

The gunman was still believed to be inside the bar an hour later, according to a police official.

People were hiding from the shooter in bathrooms and attic spaces, while others who managed to escape fled to nearby gas stations for medical help, reports claim.

It is reported to be "college night" at the bar, with some suggesting the attack was aimed at university students.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
