Stinky durian fruit grounds Indonesian passenger plane

Passengers disembarked the Sriwijaya Air flight, bound for Jakarta from Bengkulu on Sumatra Island, after complaining that the odour in the cabin would make flying unbearable.

A cargo of durian caused an Indonesian plane to be temporarily grounded after passengers complained about the fruit's room-clearing stench in the cabin.

A shipment of durian, sometimes referred to the "king of fruits", was removed from the plane after complaints.

Sriwijaya Air eventually chose to unload the sacks of durian from the flight, causing them to depart at 11.40am, an hour later than scheduled.

The report described an improper checklist procedure that failed to indicate the retracted flaps and slats of the plane and lead to the unsuccessful take-off that took the lives of passengers, crew as well as people on the ground.

"Durian is not classified as a hazardous material to be transported on a plane", Abdul said.

Footage of the incident, uploaded to Facebook by a passenger named Amir Zidane, shows travellers milling around on the tarmac as aircrew unload the offending cargo, whose smell has been likened to rotten onions, turpentine and dirty gym socks.

Sriwajiya Air later said the airline was well within its rights to carry the stinky fruit in cargo. "Many airlines do this", Retri Maya, senior corporate communications manager for Sriwijaya Airlines told the Jakarta post in a press statement.

Crew members assured him the smell would vanish as soon as the plane was in the air.

"It's not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations - carried inside the hold".

Durian is a large, spikey fruit enjoyed across Asia, but many despise the foul-smelling delicacy.

It's even banned from public transport in Singapore and Bangkok, where it's also not uncommon to see "No Durian Allowed" signs in hotels and hostels.

It was at that point that Zidane turned to his fellow passengers and asked who wanted to fly with such a smell. They all shouted back: "Not us!".
