Amazon will open separate HQ2 locations in 2 different cities

Just when you thought the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes couldn't get crazier, it did.

Amazon will not choose one city to open its second headquarters - "HQ2" - but instead will split the baby and open two new headquarters in different cities, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The journal reports Amazon is discussing incentives with government officials in Crystal City and speaking with a real estate investment trust, which owns property in the city.

Any announcement would come after midterm elections, the report said, adding that Amazon may be having similar discussions with other cities.

Amazon narrowed the options down to 20 finalists earlier this year.

Things got more interesting when Mike Grella, Amazon's director of economic development, posted on Twitter: "Memo to the genius leaking info about Crystal City, VA as #HQ2 selection".

If Crystal City or the Northern Virginia area really have been favored all along, it could raise questions of whether the other cities wasted their time and money in putting together bids. "And stop treating the (nondisclosure agreement) you signed like a used napkin". The company has satellite offices, Amazon Web Services centers, and warehouses across North America and it is constantly seeking opportunities to access new talent pools. The Wall Street Journal wrote over the weekend that the company was carrying out advanced talks with Dallas and New York City, in addition to Crystal City.

A spokesperson for Amazon declined to comment on the report.
