MS toddler found stabbed and dead in oven

Authorities said a woman is in custody after they said they found a baby that had been stabbed, placed in an oven and baked Monday night. The woman, who has not been publicly identified was being held at the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility.

Jones made an initial appearance Tuesday evening before a judge, who set bail at $500,000.

Carolyn Jones was charged in the murder of her granddaughter.

"That's hard to say", Williams said.

Royalty Marie Floyd (above) was 20 months old and living with her grandmother while her mother lived elsewhere.

A sheriff in MS said Tuesday that a first-degree murder charge is being prepared against a grandmother after her 20-month-old granddaughter was found stabbed and burned inside an oven in a home.

The sheriff said the murder charge was filed after consultations with Bolivar County District Attorney Brenda Mitchell.

"The child was found inside of the oven in the residence".

Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams, left, speaks to reporters at a news conference Tuesday in Shaw, Miss., concerning a 20-month-old girl discovered dead in an oven.

The grandmother isn't now charged but Williams describes her as being in custody. Officials haven't named her or the toddler. The baby girl's body has been transported to the MS state crime lab for autopsy.

Williams says a relative found the girl.

Williams said Jones's brother found the body Monday night and called police in Shaw, a tow of about 2,000 people approximately 100 miles northwest of Jackson. Officials will work to determine if the toddler was dead before or after being placed in the oven, according to WTVA.

Shaw, which is not far from the Arkansas border in northwest MS, is home to about 2,000 people.
