First lady's plane makes emergency landing in Washington

WASHINGTON-A plane carrying first lady Melania Trump was forced to return to Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday after a "minor mechanical issue" emerged in the air, the White House said. Secret Service agents headed toward the front of the plane.

The plane landed safely at Andrews shortly after 9 a.m. ET.

Within a few minutes the smoke and burning smell began to dissipate, according to the producer.

Aides brought the reporters wet towels, instructing them to cover their faces if the smell was too strong.

Mrs Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said "everyone is fine and everyone is safe" following the incident.

Trump was on her way to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to meet with families affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome.

According to a Health and Human Services spokesperson, Trump will continue her journey once a new plane is ready.

The first lady's plane was heading to Philadelphia for an event discussing opioid addiction.

Her visit is one of the stops she planned on making to promote her "Be Best" campaign, which focuses on major issues affecting children, including the importance of healthy pregnancies.
