Ben Affleck Signs For New Movie With Gavin O'Connor

His job: to write, and possibly direct, the sequel to Suicide Squad, one of the worst big-budget films in recent memory.

However, the hiring of Gunn implies the previous Suicide Squad 2 script from Gavin O'Connor and Todd Stashwick is being abandoned.

Following Disney's dismissal of Gunn, which happened just as San Diego Comic-Con was getting underway, his Guardians cast members all spoke out in favor of the director, imploring Disney to reconsider. After ending his initial run in 1992, modern Suicide Squad creator John Ostrander was brought back to the title in 2007 to revamp the team, not unlike how Gunn is now coming in to revitalize the franchise.

Looks like James Gunn might be switching from Marvel to DC.

To many fans, it appeared as if Suicide Squad simply attempted to replicate the success of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, a film that also featured a band of merry criminals forging a bond through (cosmic) fire.

DCEU fans, on the other hand, were thrilled at the idea of Gunn directing the film, as his style and sense of humor seems like a ideal fit for such a group. Heck, the Suicide Squad trailer using Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was a move that felt very Guardians of the Galaxy-ish. The project doesn't have a release date yet, but is expected after Cathy Yan's Birds Of Prey, which is scheduled for 2020. This comes after Gunn was sacked from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after alt-right figures unearthed inappropriate and offensive old tweets from Gunn, who is reported to write and possibly direct this DC movie. "Gunn has closed a deal to pen the script". Guardians actor Dave Bautista is excited about Warner Bros. and DC's decision, jokingly (maybe?) suggesting that he wants to be involved in the anti-hero sequel. So, we are hoping that Gunn's addition to the squad would help Suicide Squad 2 put up a better show. Despite this, the Guardians of the Galaxy's main cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Bautista, who all still supported him and asked for Disney to reinstate Gunn as the film's director.
