Android co-founder Andy Rubin and his Essential team are back and believed to be relatively close to having a new prototype smartphone that is heavily focused on AI.

As per a Bloomberg report, the upcoming AI-powered smartphone from Essential is unlike any standard smartphone.

Apparently due to this very different approach the phone would be marketed as a product created to complement a user's existing smartphone, or one aimed at people who want to spend less time staring at a phone screen.

Previously there were reports about the company working on its second smartphone as well as a smart home speaker. It is said to have a small screen, indirectly stressing more on the usage of voice commands. Why have an extra device when you can use your phone to do exactly the same with an app? This could also be the company's last attempt to break into the consumer electronics market. Although Essential is yet to confirm any of the aforementioned speculations, Rubin did drop a hint about such a device previous year in an interview with Bloomberg.

"If I can get to the point where your phone is a virtual version of you, you can be off enjoying your life, having that dinner, without touching your phone, and you can trust your phone to do things on your behalf", Mr Rubin told Bloomberg in an interview a year ago. "I think I can solve part of the addictive behavior". Essential may be working on a handset that doesn't follow the expected flagship expectations, as far as design goes. Rubin imagined it as a single hub with its own voice-command technology that could run queries through Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant - a feat that would likely require cooperation from three competitors.
