Tropical Storm Michael Will Become a Hurricane Monday

Michael was likely to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane sometime Tuesday, meteorologist Danielle Niles of CBS Boston reports.

"While the impacts are still uncertain, our area could experience increased wind activity and heavy rainfall, which could cause localised flooding and downed trees", Tallahassee officials said in a statement.

"Hurricane conditions will spread over portions of western Cuba this afternoon, where a hurricane warning is now in effect".

Scott first ordered requiring backup generators for air-conditioning in September 2017, days after a dozen residents overheated and died at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills following Hurricane Irma.

Michael's maximum sustained winds increased to 90 miles per hour on Monday night, the National Hurricane Center reported in its 11 p.m. EST update. Remember, this storm could grow stronger and be a Category 3 hitting our state. Movement is now due north at 12 miles per hour. Tomorrow, a NE turn is still expected.

"That means the Panhandle and Big Bend can see winds in excess of 100 miles per hour".

That Michael will move toward Florida should not come as a great surprise. Winds above 37mph (60kmh) and waves of two-to-three metres (6.5-10 feet) are expected on the coasts of Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

Walton County, now charted to be on the western side of the storm, announced a mandatory evacuation Monday for all areas south of Choctawhatchee Bay and east to the county line. As of right now it is forecasted to make landfall Wednesday.

Midday Monday, winds were already clocking in at 75 mph 140 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico, with authorities predicting Cuba could see between 4 and 8 inches of rain - which could lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

Now ranked as a category-1 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale, Michael could grow into a category-3 storm, with the power to uproot trees, block roads and knock out power for days by the time it hits Florida on Wednesday. This soon to be tropical storm will be a big rain maker and could become a hurricane in a couple of days. "We're going to get storm surge, we have wind, we have a chance of flooding, we have a significant chance of tornadoes".

President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House the country was very well prepared for the hurricane, adding it was much bigger than had been expected.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami is tracking Tropical Storm Michael, which formed from a tropical depression in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday. With Michael's winds projected to be even stronger than that, Wakulla County residents were urged to evacuate inland. Specifics will be ironed out as the storm gets closer. So make sure any preparations are completed this morning.
