Snapchat introduces Snap Originals, exclusive shows made for its platform

Snapchat is one of the most popular social networks among teenagers and young adults and it's been trying to engage its user base with original shows within the app for a while.

Snap has only announced three shows as a start, but more are probably in the works if the service proves to be a success.

Snapchat is among the most popular social networks for young smartphone users but its user growth has stalled since its publish share offering a year ago, as Facebook and its Instagram network began offering similar services.

The new shows include Co-Ed, a comedy from the Duplass Brothers known for their HBO programs; Class of Lies, a thriller involving college students with a true-crime podcast; and Endless Summer, a documentary series following rising stars from the creators of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians".

Snapchat hopes these new programs will find audiences that rival or surpass its current offerings, which include NBC News' twice-daily news broadcast, Stay Tuned, which has doubled its audience over the past year and now reaches 5 million unique viewers per day. You can find them on the Discover page, where there'll be a section for each show. The short run time could resonate with the short attention span of today's youth, accustomed to the instant gratification that technology brings us today. AR is still more of a novelty, but it will be interesting to see that specific implementation. Snapchat also said it's introducing new augmented reality features so users can interact with a show's characters or react to scenes.
