Thai rescue diver sues Elon Musk over 'pedo' comments

A British diver who criticized Elon Musk's attempted contribution to the sensational cave rescue of a Thai boy's soccer team has filed suit against the billionaire for calling him a pedophile.

Unsworth had declared that Musk could "stick his submarine where it hurts", prompting the billionaire to take to Twitter and call him a "pedo guy" to his 22 million-plus followers.

The lawsuit seeks $75,000 (£57,000) in compensation and an injunction against Mr Musk to stop further allegations.

Musk called Unsworth a "pedo" after Unsworth criticised Musk in a television interview.

Unsworth was publicly critical of Musk's attempts to involve himself in the rescue using a purpose-built miniature submarine, which Unsworth described as having "absolutely no chance of working".

Mr Musk then went on to accuse Mr Unsworth of marrying "a child bride who was about 12 years old at the time" and that Chiang Rai, where Mr Unsworth lives with his Thai wife, "is renowned for child sex-trafficking".

Later Mr Musk deleted the tweets and apologised after being criticised by shareholders, the lawsuit alleged, stating in a tweet that his words were "spoken in anger" and that the sub was built out of kindness according to specifications from the dive team leader.

After a letter was sent asking Mr Musk to "correct the public record", Mr Musk tweeted again asking: "You don't think it's odd he hasn't sued me?"

Tesla Inc is bringing most collision repairs in-house, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said in a tweet on Sunday, saying owners of the vehicles were experiencing excessive wait times at body shops. A separate lawsuit is being filed in London for the damages Unsworth, who is British, suffered in England and Wales, his lawyer said.

The boys, ages 11-16, were found on July 2 by Volanthen and Stanton, according to the lawsuit.

The case is Unsworth v Musk, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 18-08048.

Vernon Unsworth says he was the first foreign diver to arrive in Thailand to help rescue the 12 boys trapped in the cave with their soccer coach.
