The groundbreaking new Apple Watch feature that could save your life

Apple - like Google, Samsung and other big tech companies - has lately been talking up a newfound interest in digital health and limiting excess screen time.

It follows previous rumours that the company will introduce a larger screened 6.5in iPhone - allegedly the XS Max - alongside the new 5.8in display iPhone XS, which is the same size screen as last year's iPhone X. With the competition in mind, it's understandable why Apple has made the extraordinary move to make a different set of iPhones just for Chinese customers.

Last year Apple softened the blow by keeping the home button on the more traditional iPhone 8.

All the new features and sensors have no ill effects on battery life, claims Apple.

Apple hasn't compromised on the XR's defense against the elements, though.

Apple unveiled three new iPhones, including two with bigger displays, but perhaps the more dramatic announcement from Cupertino, Calif., on Wednesday was its new Apple Watch, with the new health-related tools.

You can preorder the iPhone XR for $749 on 19 October, with shipping starting a week later on 26 October. It will cost much less than the Xs and Xs Max, predicted to be around $600. Are there any iPhones that will fit in a pair of women's trousers? Overall users get a viewing and interactive area that is up to 30 per cent larger thanks to the bigger screens and narrower device borders. After that, you'll pay $49 to replace the battery of any old iPhone model, except for the iPhone X, whose battery replacement fee will go up to $69. Samsung launched its Note line in 2011 with a 5.3-inch phone that seemed comical at the time. While its removal can be seen as penny pinching (and with Apple you never know), the actual use that adapter got is of suspect, considering most people just use the bundled EarPods or possibly get the AirPods.

It's an engineering marvel that Apple's been able to pack in so much screen, so many sensors and so much processing power into such a small space.

Interestingly, in Singapore, the price for the 512GB iPhone XS Max is 2,349 Singapore dollars or $1711, making the difference only $262 - a far better deal than the price difference for last year's iPhone X. The phone, which costs more than a basic Apple laptop ($1449 in its maxed-out Max configuration), is in many ways becoming a replacement for a laptop - minus the keyboard.

And while the USA prices make you think about getting a loan, wait till you see the prices in Europe and elsewhere.

It's the flawless tool for taking bigger selfies, for pawing at bigger Instagram pictures, for streaming even more Netflix. Apple doesn't release sales figures, but estimates from two analysts suggest the company shipped roughly 18 million of the gadgets in 2017.

Good luck ever putting it down. (There's a 7-megapixel, f/2.2 camera on the front.) Like the Google Pixel phones, the XR can do software bokeh or portrait mode; using iOS 12, it can also fool with the extent of the bokeh after the fact, blurring or sharpening the background of the image.
