Emery 'happy without the result' as Arsenal comeback falls short

FC's Craig Burley breaks down the defensive struggles that plagued both Chelsea and Arsenal in a game littered with goals.

But they had him craving one of his trademark cigarettes during a "horrible" 15 minutes when the Gunners forced their way back into a frenetic Premier League London derby.

The Gunners lost 3-2 to a late Marcos Alonso goal and Emery failed to shake hands with his Blues rival at the final whistle.

The rejuvenation of Alvaro Morata caught the eye, as did the influence of Hazard on the outcome.

Chelsea's own problems with defending were to be exposed, however. Because Chelsea are one of the most important clubs in Europe.

The Spanish transfer window is open until August 31 and Sarri repeated his belief, stated prior to the opening-day win at Huddersfield, that Hazard will remain at Chelsea this season.

Mkhitaryan turned provider soon afterward, crossing for Iwobi to fire in from the position where the Armenian and Aubameyang had missed. That said, Chelsea's new No. 1 didn't look fazed by the fragile backline in front of him. Would Arsene Wenger have withdrawn Granit Xhaka at half time, or hooked Mesut Ozil after one of his more anonymous shifts?

Cesar Azpilicueta was once again the provider, with a long, bending ball over the top of Arsenal's high back-line.

Emery had quality on the Arsenal bench, but not of the same standard to that enjoyed by Chelsea, and he has none of the defensive quality that Sarri possesses.

Few expected him to turn things around in 2018-19, particularly after an underwhelming pre-season campaign, but Sarri was in no doubt that the Spain striker would rediscover his goalscoring touch ahead of the visit of Arsenal.

Kovacic, Jorginho and N'Golo Kante; that's not a bad midfield trio to have. The flip side is that Chelsea lacked his presence in front of the defence when it was needed and were exposed as a result.

Today's clash against Arsenal will be Sarri's first London derby since arriving from Napoli last month.

Pedro's pace had caused Sokratis to panic and Arsenal was punished by the Spaniard soon afterward, with Alonso racing onto Jorginho's pass and crossing for Pedro to tuck in easily.

"It is better to be on the pitch than watching on the bench", said Hazard.

MF Mateo Kovacic, 7 - Impressive. Our reaction is good, we had chances to go 2-2 and we deserved to do more at half-time.

New season, new manager but same old Eden Hazard, dynamic, deadly and decisive as ever.

Alonso had set up Chelsea's ninth-minute opener, racing onto Jorginho's clever pass and squaring the ball for Pedro to score easily.
