Jose Mourinho Second with Manchester United among my biggest achievements

EVERTON showed Manchester United how to land their transfer targets with three big-name signings yesterday, while Jose Mourinho was left empty-handed on deadline day.

Brazil global Fred, highly-rated but raw full-back Diogo Dalot and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant all arrived at United by early July, but nobody followed despite Mourinho's explicit desire to bring in two more players.

Mourinho is very fond of the Welsh winger and there's been plenty of speculation surrounding a move to Man United in each of the last three summers.

And that's when Twitter uses did a bit of digging and found Neville's tweet from six years ago, implying those who leave it late are not well-run clubs.

United contacted Atletico Madrid about Diego Godin but it quickly became evident that the move was a no-go, while an official offer was not made for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.

Mourinho's comments seem a stark contrast to those which he reverberated during his side's pre-season tour of America - where he seemingly ruled out any chance of the younger members of his squad breaking into the first team during the upcoming campaign, insisted Anthony Martial should have spent less time with his newborn child and slammed fans for paying money to watch Manchester United play overseas.

How Mourinho reacts from now will be dictated to some extent by results, but the key objectives at the turn of the year have all been fulfilled as far as the club are concerned. Internally, the greatest frustration for Mourinho has been waiting for the return those players who had the longest World Cup campaigns.

"But it's the same conversation as with (Ashley) Young, (Marouane) Fellaini, (Jesse) Lingard, it's the same".

"If they feel they can help us, 20 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour".

"I think what Jose Mourinho saw and what all of us saw in the summer was Paul Pogba smashing the middle of the France changing room, calling on the rest of the players, demanding more from them. I'd prefer to have them even if they are not top, top, top".

"I have my players and I like my players", Mourinho said. "I like to work with my players". "It is a lie, repeated 1,000 times".
