James Bond: Door open for Idris Elba to be ‘first black 007’

Director Antoine Fuqua chatted to Barbara about who will take over from Daniel Craig, 50, if he hangs up his gun after the next Bond film, due next year.

The discussion over who could play the next James Bond could be nearing it's conclusion, as the biggest clue yet has been dropped over the next actor's identity. "Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who's certain the progressive move "will happen eventually", with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role". There's also the fact that Elba plans to follow up his directorial debut Yardie with an amibitious adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, as actor, director, producer and musician - so he may well be too busy for Bond. "Idris could do it if he was in shape", Fuqua said. 'You need a guy with a physically strong presence.

The Luther actor said that people only suggest his name for the role because he's black, not because he's right for the role.

The Independent say that producers are "leaning toward" the English actor for the role of James Bond when Daniel Craig vacates it - which will be after the next Danny Boyle-directed outing. That's the part that I'm like, 'Ugh, come on.' Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?

He said to Vanity Fair: "It could be a woman - could be a black woman, could be a white woman".

'Bond would be a really fun role. I think that now that I have my Mission: Impossible badge we can do real stunts and really amp it up as well...'
