At least 4 people dead in shooting, Canadian police say

The force said on its Twitter feed that the "incident is ongoing", and confirmed at least four people have died.

She also reported that people were being escorted out of the area by police.

Fredericton is located about 50 miles northeast of the US border with Maine.

Fredericton resident Robert DiDiodata said he heard a series of "firecracker" sounds around 7am (8pm AEST).

"With the tempo, it might've been a gunshot", he said. "It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop", Mr DiDiodato said.

Halifax Regional Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais says he has spoken to Fredericton Police Force's chief to offer any support they need.

A worker at a nearby Tim Horton's coffee and doughnut shop revealed staff had locked the doors and are keping customrs insid.

In 2014, another mass shooting in New Brunswick led to the deaths of three Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers and the wounding of two more in Moncton.

A second tweet shortly afterwards added: "Due to the volume of calls, please refrain from calling the police station directly, and in case of emergency continue to call 9-1-1".

However in recent years, Canada has seen a dramatic uptick in high-profile shootings.
