Twitter reacts to new Oscars popular film category: 'This is so lazy'

"We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours, delivering a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide", the board of governors at the Academy of Motion Pictures said in a letter to members.

In a statement, the organization revealed the addition of a new category that is being designed around "outstanding achievement in popular film", promising more details and eligibility requirements to come.

Going forward, some awards will be presented during commercial breaks, with edited acceptance speeches broadcast later in the program.

Many people took to social media to criticize the new category.

As of now, it's unclear if these changes will be in effect during this winter's upcoming Oscars, or the 2020 telecast.

Could this be "Black Panther's" big chance?

Australia's Logie Awards wrestle with a similar issue, in that they have two groups of categories, one voted by the audience, and the other voted by juries of industry professionals.

This complaint has already spawned some changes to the Academy's annual ceremony, most notably a decision in 2009 to expand Best Picture nominees from five to 10 in part because one of 2008's most acclaimed films, The Dark Knight, was left out of the Best Picture category that year. However, the date for next year's Awards will still be the 24th of February. The 2018 best picture victor, "The Shape of Water", had grossed $57.4 million in the United States by the time the awards aired and $63.9 million total.

The immediate concern over this new category is whether it will ensure that popular films which might at least had a chance to receive a Best Picture nomination will be shut out.

Another new, major change will be trying to keep the Oscars broadcast to a tight three hours.

The board also announced a shorter show of three hours.

The Academy did not offer specifics about how the category will be defined. While the Board of Governors probably hoped the fresh category would excite viewers and perhaps get those ratings up - spoiler alert - Hollywood pretty much hates it.

Next year's Oscars will take place Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Among the changes is to present fewer categories live. Even comedy films were once nominated! Which is a huge bummer for those of us who used to tune in exclusively to see who'd win the award for Best Costume Design. But they've sought to address it, in years past, by zipping through the technical awards (which are held and taped days before the main Oscars telecast) and hectoring presenters to keep their acceptance speeches pithy.
