Sony to release limited-edition PS4 in celebration of 500 million sales

In 1994, the PlayStation made its debut in Japan and, as of today, Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially sold over 500 million PlayStation family systems total. Like the console, these two accessories will be a dark, translucent blue with copper accents.

Anybody planning to grab one of the 500 Million PS4 Pros? To celebrate the milestone, the company is launching a Limited Edition 500 Million version of the PS4 Pro. That's more than you get with most of the console bundles that Sony sells, though unfortunately, there isn't a game packed in.

The special design sees the classic black PS4 traded for a deep blue translucent console with copper PS4 logos, with the unit's individual number (1 to 50,000) inscribed on the front.

The other standout feature is that it comes with a 2TB hard drive, doubling the capacity of current PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. Examples include 09995 (Sept. 9th, 1995, US PlayStation launch), 01115 (Nov. 15, 2013, US PS4 launch) and 01013 (Oct. 13, 2016, US PS VR launch). Another serial number to keep an eye out for is 01013, which is the USA launch date of PSVR. A 500 Million Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset featuring the same dark blue transluscent design with copper detailing will also be released for $99.99 Dollars / $119.99 CAD / €89.99 / 12,000 yen.

If you're going to pick one up, be prepared to plop down $499.99 - it's not exactly cheap, but it's also worth keeping in mind that Sony is only making 50,000 of these. The system goes on sale on August 24 - keep an eye on the console's official PlayStation.com page for a list of participating retailers.
