Diego Godin rejects Manchester United deadline day approach

Rumours emerged on Thursday morning suggesting Godin was the latest defensive target on United's wanted list, but Atletico were quick to dismiss the prospect of selling their iconic defensive talisman and are believed to be ready to offer the 32-year-old a new contract.

Sources close to the negotiations confirmed on Thursday that officials from United contacted Atletico this week to discuss a deal for Godin, who was entering the final year of his contract.

Manchester United have reportedly approached Spanish side Atletico Madrid over the possible signing of Uruguayan defender Diego Godin.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone spoke with Godin at the beginning of preseason to make it clear he wants him to stay.

According to Sky Sports, United have made a move for Godin and are chasing a deal for the 32-year-old, considered one of the finest defenders on the planet.

Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina, Jerome Boateng and Kurt Zouma have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last couple of weeks, only for United to reach deadline day without signing any of them.

"So it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

'I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to this first couple of matches.

"The information I have is no", said Mourinho when asked if he expected any signings or departures from Old Trafford on deadline day.

The report claims United also offered to double Godin's wages to £8.1m-per-season after tax but unfortunately they have not been given any encouragement that a deal can be done before today's 5pm deadline.

United have signed three players this summer, with Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant being added to the squad.
