He is now in his home country and barring any more surprises, will move to Real Madrid before tomorrow's 5pm transfer deadline for a fee of around £35m.

The former Atletico stopper was supposed to return to Cobham to meet up with the squad at the beginning of the week following his extended summer leave but failed to show up on Monday and Tuesday, risking the possibility of a misconduct fine.

Kepa signed a seven-year contract and reacted to his quick switch to London.

Chelsea have signed Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a world record 80 million-euro ($92.8 million) fee from Athletic Bilbao, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

Chelsea have just announced that they have agreed terms for Thibaut Courtois to join Real Madrid, with midfielder Mateo Kovacic going the other way on loan as part of the deal.

Upon completing his move to Chelsea, Kepa said: "It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life".

He helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea academy graduate spent last season out on loan at Crystal Palace and was largely impressive despite only scoring two goals.

Kepa made his global debut for Spain in November, keeping a clean sheet in a friendly win over Costa Rica, and was named to the Spain squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer, though he didn't play.

The deal for Kepa outstrips the £66.8m paid by Liverpool for Alisson last month.

Arrizabalaga has played 53 La Liga matches for Athletic Bilbao since breaking into the team in 2016.

Real, meanwhile, confirmed Courtois will undergo a medical on Thursday morning before signing a six-year deal. The 26-year-old, named the best goalkeeper at the World Cup as Belgium finished third, has one year remaining on his contract and reportedly wishes to join Real Madrid.
