Steven Gerrard's First League Game Tainted By Ridiculous Red-Card

Steven Gerrard, who scaled such heights as a player, will find the first month of the Scottish season a demanding one that could define Rangers' campaign and his own chances of success at Ibrox.

Derek McInnes believes that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos deserved to be sent off in Sunday's 1-1 draw between Aberdeen and the Light Blues at Pittodrie.

"There is a decision to make for the penalty, it is red card, is it a yellow card so everything seemed to go against us."
If it was the other way I am not sure if it is a red card for anybody else.

"I would like to reassure members of the public that we take their safety extremely seriously and sufficient resources will be deployed at future games to tackle anti-social behaviour and violence". "We need to be a bit more streetwise in that moment".

'The rules state that if you don't make an attempt to play the ball, you should be punished. "I thought we were very good with 11 men, I thought we were even better when we went down to 10".

Souness admits Rangers are playing catch up with Celtic, not helped by the Bhoys having Champions League cash, but he does not think the task is impossible for Gerrard.

Speaking to RangersTV the 29-year-old said: "It does feel a little hard done by, I don't know if it should but with ten men and the circumstances of losing a goal in the 91 minute it is understandable".

'No way in the world was his kick out violent. I think we should still be saying that because what a shift the boys put in.

'I had a chat with the ref. It is what is is.

'I can't control if the issue is going to be ongoing.

Aberdeen gave Premier League club Burnley a scare on Thursday as they forced Sean Dyche's side to extra-time in their Europa League clash at Turf Moor before eventually slumping to a 3-1 defeat and a 4-2 loss over the two legs.

Perhaps a red card was fairly harsh, but there is no doubt Steven Gerrard will be left ruing Morelos' petulance. We've had two really good tests against Osijek over the past seven days, as well as the friendly with Wigan, where we could get people up to speed.
