Red Tide vs. Blue-Green Algae: There is a Difference

These samples are analyzed for detection and enumeration of Karenia brevis-the species responsible for Florida red tide-along with water quality parameters, phytoplankton community composition, and red tide toxins, officials said. The county has also provided dumpster sites for residents as far south as Bonita Springs to dispose of dead fish.

And red tide may be to blame.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say controlling the red tide is complicated. Tissue taken from the whale shark's organs and muscles tested positive for brevetoxin, a neurotoxin created by the algae.

Scott directed the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to "mobilize all available resources" to address impacts in Southwest Florida.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, almost 300 sea turtles have died since a red tide algae bloom started late a year ago between Sarasota and Collier counties.

To humans, breathing in air containing the toxic algae can cause people to suffer from tearing eyes and frequent coughing and sneezing.

The latest red tide report from the FWC shows high concentrations along the southwest Florida coast.

The city is issuing a daily "fish kill clean-up" report because of the "unprecedented volume of dead sea life now washing up".

But the bloom is not only risky to marine animals.

"We are seeing more than double the number of animals being impacted at this time of the year, from the red tide", said Trindell.

A combination of red tide along Florida's coastline and blue-green algae in rivers and canals is killing a variety of animals in Florida waters this summer.
