5 killed when small plane crashes in California parking lot

Concialdi added that no one on the ground was hurt and there was no fire.

The plane was going to the nearby John Wayne Airport when it crashed around 12.30 pm (1 am Indian time on Monday) near the South Coast Plaza shopping mall, authorities said.

Photos of the incident show the plane's debris scattered among the palms that surround the parking space.

The Orange County Fire Department said the plane's engine cut out before it could make it to the airport. Tony Bommarito said. "This was a Sunday afternoon and we have people shopping, so the fact that we have no injuries on the ground is a miracle in itself". The plane struck a parked vehicle but no one on the ground was injured, he said.

The 1973 Cessna 414 was registered to Category III Aviation Corp.in San Francisco company and had flown from the San Francisco Bay area suburb of Concord, according to FAA records.

"It actually came down in front of us".

"We looked up to see the plane falling nose first", she told the Times. It lost control and it just fell straight down.

Fire authorities were called at 12:28 local time (19:28 GMT) after the small plane hit a parked red auto, while its owner was in a shop.

"I don't know anything about what this pilot did or what he was thinking, but it could have been much more tragic", Bommarito said.
