No Man’s Sky finally gets multiplayer with NEXT update

Fight as a pirate or a wingman in space battles with friends. And it's all for free and will launch on July 24.

One of the biggest new features that comes with the Next update (yes, that is its actual name) will be multiplayer, allowing you to team up with budding explorers either as a group of mates or with random players.

"Nearly two years ago our small team of friends, with a shared love of sci-fi, opened up the universe of No Man's Sky for the first time", Hello Games said in a press release.

Here's the lowdown on what you are getting on July 24th on PS4, Xbox One owners can pick up the game on August 9th.

Play in first or third-person mode, both on-foot and in your ship.

There's even full character customisation now, which explains why some of the players in the trailer are dressed up as one of those little Gek aliens, who were previously just trading NPCs in the base version of the game.

Base building has undergone some changes for the Next update, and players will now be able to construct multiple bases anywhere on a planet.

Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits. You can assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter, or deploy them to assist you in your interplanetary exploration.

Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship. It's possible that these are all part of a new non-playable race of beings in the game, as the overseers in No Man's Sky are mechanical in makeup as well. Hello Games have also invited players to bring "friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commision Station on your bridge". As you might remember, the game was blasted by many for its overall lack of content and for not living up to some of the ambitious promises that preceded its highly-anticipated release. "It was an innovative, weird and at times lonely game". The game we got in 2016 felt unfinished.
