Many Irish will echo Gareth Southgate's attitude to 'football's coming home' song

He said that it was only after England beat Scotland 2-0 in their second game that the stadium MC played the song with the crowd singing the chorus, "It's Coming Home".

Tonight (Wednesday) sees the England football team in its first World Cup semi-final in 28 years and Three Lions (Football's Coming Home) is sweeping the nation - again.

Gareth Southgate has done numerous things during the World Cup finals - but you can sum up in three words what his has achieved for his country - Pride and Trust. But while the tournament was a huge success and is fondly remembered by most, it ended in misery for Southgate when he missed the decisive penalty in the shootout against rivals Germany. I still look back on it as an incredible life experience and to be involved with it, I just needed a bit of time to get over it. We have come back after 20 years to the semis and we deserve it. We want this to be a family-friendly occasion and a chance for England fans young and old to show the positive spirit of football to the country and the world.

However, through my crash course in the other* football, I keep finding more and more striking parallels in the trajectory of each team and their supporters.

"Why didn't you ask me about when I played well?"

Southgate drew parallels between the class of '96 and his current generation, noting similarities but also the current squad's relative inexperience.

"Sometimes, you have to go through hard times and failures to learn and improve", he said. "All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying 'ok, today we will see who will be exhausted'".

While most of us will be plonking ourselves in front of a screen for the big game between England and Croatia tonight, there are a dedicated few that are actually making the trek over to Russian Federation to see the action unfold IRL. We have emerging leaders. "We were a group of guys having a lot of fun, enjoying our football, learning and improving all the time - and that's what these lads have done". We feel we're in a good place playing well.
