Gerrard signs Sodiq on a season long loan for Rangers from Roma

UMAR Sadiq admits he planned to stay at Roma this season before the lure of Steven Gerrard steered the striker all the way to Glasgow.

"Rangers are delighted to announce the signing of Umar Sadiq on a season long loan from Roma, subject to worldwide clearance".

Having showcased his talents in his home country and impressed then at Serie B side Spezia, that earned him his move to Roma and an initial loan spell saw them tie him down to permanent terms.

Talking to Rangers TV, the midfielder said he was anxious he was the victim of a prank call when Gerrard phoned him to discuss a move to Rangers.

The fans already seem to have given him an interesting nickname but I'll let you discover that for yourselves, I couldn't possible repeat the intimation here!

He must now turn his attention to Thursday's Europa League qualifying match against Macedonian team FK Shkupi.

"When my agent told me Steven Gerrard is the head coach, I said, OK "no problem" and I was happy to come and join this team".

Speaking to RangersTV Sadiq - whose deal is subject to global clearance and who claimed that, "in Nigeria I am compared to the legend Kanu and Emmanuel Adebayor" - said: "It is very good to be here, it has been good so far and I can't wait to start".

Mali global Coulibaly, who has been capped 10 times, admits the lure of playing for Gerrard was too good to turn down. He just asked me whether if I wanted to join his team or not and I said yes.

He follows the signings of centre-backs Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, right-back Jon Flanagan, wingers Jamie Murphy and Scott Arfield, goalkeeper Allan McGregor and midfielder Ovie Ejaria (loan).

"He can help me to develop my football".
