World's ugliest dog Zsa Zsa dies just weeks after winning title

The 9-year-old dog died in her sleep early Tuesday morning, owner Megan Brainard told TODAY.

The victor of this year's World's Ugliest Dog Contest had always been a fighter; Zsa Zsa spent her first five years of life in a puppy mill in Missouri before she was saved by the nonprofit Underdog Rescue.

Zsa Zsa won the 2018 World's Ugliest Dog contest, which takes place in the San Francisco Bay area, a little more than a week ago before she crossed the rainbow bridge.

"I'm still in shock", she said.

One June 23, Zsa Zsa - with her barrel chest, slobbering tongue and a pink manicure - won the 30th annual World's Ugliest Dog contest in California.

Brainard, who won $1,500 for Zsa Zsa's victory, said she found the dog - named after the late actress Zsa Zsa Gabor - on a pet-finding site, according to the contest bio.

Brainard told TODAY that Zsa Zsa's passing was "devastating". "I picked Zsa Zsa up and took her outside and laid her down in the grass". We were all saying our goodbyes and Mareslie went right over and gave her a kiss.

"She knew she was special", Brainard told TODAY.

"From the moment we saw her handsome face, we knew we would be her forever home", Brainard said at the time.

"From the moment we saw her attractive face, we knew we would be her forever home", her owners said in a statement on the contest's website.
