If I was Mesut Ozil, I’d retire from worldwide duty - father

In fact, the amount of criticism that the Arsenal midfielder has received for his lacklustre performances at the World Cup have convinced Ozil's father that his son should quit worldwide duty altogether.

The Arsenal playmaker has been targeted for criticism in the aftermath of the 2014 champions' premature exit from the ongoing World Cup and as a effect, his future on the worldwide scene has been called into question.

That chorus has only increased since Germany's debacle in Russian Federation with team manager Olivier Bierhoff stating that Ozil should have been dropped after his failure to publicly clear up the Erdogan meeting. "In my opinion, it is aimed at saving one's own skin", Mustafa Ozil told Bild.

Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan, who both have Turkish roots, were booed by German fans in pre-World cup friendlies after posing for pictures with Erdogan.

Yet this meeting drew a lot of criticism from German fans because they believed it was a sign he is not truly loyal to his country - not to mention that President Erdoğan has been labelled a dictator for his controversial policies in Turkey.

But, as effectively the No. 2 in the Germany set-up, he anticipated "profound changes" after the dismal campaign in Russian Federation, for which he said the entire squad should take "collective responsibility". I can understand if he feels insulted.

Ozil has still not commented, however, which is something DFB chief Reinhard Grindel says needs to be rectified.

Bierhoff says Ozil's silence was an issue "especially as we did not present ourselves as a team - the energy that always made us strong was not there".

It has since been confirmed that Joachim Löw will remain in charge of the German national team, despite their disappointing performance in Russian Federation.

"He's a player, you know him as well, who is pretty quickly upset, he doesn't like his criticism, he doesn't want to talk. But that's just my very personal opinion".
