Netflix is Launching a New Smart Download Feature

Netflix isn't yet ready to automatically predict and download shows or movies that you might want to watch, reports Quartz.

Netflix is figuring out how to make TV work on your smartphone, where downloading a TV show can mean less room for selfies or devour your data plan.

Sadly there's still no one-stop option to download an entire season of a show, so if you're stocking up on episodes for a long flight, or a trip out somewhere with poor mobile coverage, you'll still need to do it manually.

Buzzfeed reports that if you're watching a series, the feature automatically deletes watched episodes, then downloads the next one in line. "Furthermore, if you don't have space and data constraints, you can always turn Smart Downloads off and download on Netflix the regular way", said Mr Johnson. It will hit Android smartphones and tablets first, and iOS devices later. Imagine you download an episode or two of Stranger Things at home and watch it on the subway ride to work.

"We also want to emphasize that giving consumers more control over their entertainment experience is at the heart of everything we do, and members can choose when they want to use Smart Downloads".

Smart Downloads can be turned off straight from the app's settings if you like.

New to Netflix this month is the latest season of Orange Is the New Black, a fresh batch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Somebody Feed Phil: The Second Course, Shameless season 8, and more.

For now, the feature is limited to TV shows.

The video-streaming giant finally caved to pressure back in 2016 when it allowed subscribers to download some movies and TV shows to watch offline.
