BEIJING BETRAYAL? Trump Accuses China of MEDDLING in North Korea Talks

"Particularly, they have suggested that they are disappointed by the United States insistence on focusing on the denuclearisation plans over what they described as big-picture issues", she said. "The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved".

Trump tweeted Monday "we agreed to the denuclearization of North Korea" and suggested China "may be exerting negative pressure" on North Korea because of an escalating trade dispute between the USA and China.

Lawmakers are asking what comes next if talks between the USA and North Korea break down, and are looking back to pre-summit practices.

In a statement issued by a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman and carried by the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea lashed out at the United States for seeking "unilateral and forced denuclearisation" from Pyongyang.

Last week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea to meet with officials for a third time.

After discussions in Pyongyang, North Korea's foreign ministry said that the U.S. was making unilateral demands aimed at forcing it into giving up its nuclear arsenal.

Kim made a broad commitment in Singapore to "work toward denuclearization" but did not give details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear program. Trump, by contrast, was caught saluting a North Korean general.

When a reporter asked about North Korea's Saturday comments, Pompeo didn't seem too bothered.

Still, the veteran diplomat sees the need for Pompeo, with the backing of the president, to continue negotiating with North Korea for the sake of the USA, its allies in the region and the rest of the world.

Hyundai Elevator, the largest shareholder of the operator of Mount Geumgan resort in North Korea, tumbled 12% as of 1:36 p.m.in Seoul, while Namhae Chemical, Hyundai Rotem, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, fell, as well.

Pompeo, however, said more talks were needed on both.

That appeared to be a reference to Trump's national security adviser John Bolton, a prominent North Korea hawk who has been vilified by Pyongyang in the past.

Pompeo added that the US and world powers would maintain economic sanctions against North Korea until full denuclearization was achieved.

DPRK is short for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official title.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stressed the importance of a comprehensive resolution of issues related to North Korea during his meeting with Pompeo.

US Senator Lindsey Graham said on Sunday: "I see China's hands all over this".

Interested in Donald Trump? "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Mr Pompeo said. "We expect this to be followed up by further constructive and productive negotiations".

Speaking Thursday aboard Air Force One on a trip to Montana, Trump said he still believes Kim will follow through on his promise to denuclearize and that he forged a personal connection with the leader at their Singapore summit last month. "Sanctions will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearization".

This, he said, has "stoked distrust and increased the danger of war". "This really shows the unwavering bond of the Japan-U.S. alliance", Abe said.
