Arsenal complete £26.5m signing of Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira

Lucas Torreira has agreed terms on a five-year contract with Arsenal.

Torreira chose not to undergo his medical during the tournament as he wanted to focus on representing Uruguay and he starred for the South American's as they reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by France on Friday.

He was warmly greeted by Unai Emery at London Colney as he arrived to complete the formalities, though he won't start training straight away as his season has only just drawn to a close.

The deal is believed to be in the region of £25 million for Torreira who featured for his country in this summer's World Cup.

According to L'Equipe, Guendouzi had attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund, Roma and PSG but Unai Emery ensured that Arsenal won the race by convincing the midfielder to join the Premier League club.

Torreira, who had been at Sampdoria for three years, said he did not feel nervous about the challenge awaiting him in playing at one of England's most historic clubs. Although the exact fee hasn't been disclosed, the Daily Mail claim Arsenal have paid around £25m for the 22-year-old's signature.

After wrapping-up his fourth signing of the summer, Emery expressed his delight at bringing Torreira to the club.

The Gunners landed the Fray Bentos-born defensive midfielder from Serie A side Sampdoria.

The Arsenal new signing has been given the shirt no.11 which was previously worn by Mesut Ozil in the past but Lucas Torreira will now be wearing it next season as he plays his first season in the English competition.
