Trump Accepts Scott Pruitt Resignation After EPA Chief Reaches Peak Swampiness

Scandal-hit Scott Pruitt has resigned as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency.

"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency", tweeted the president, ending months of speculation about the future of the man he had tasked with dismantling former president Barack Obama's green legacy.

Yet, in tweets announcing Pruitt's resignation, Trump said the former Oklahoma attorney general had "done an outstanding job".

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", Trump concluded.

During his confirmation hearing to be the EPA's deputy administrator, Wheeler was overshadowed by another Trump nominee, Kathleen Hartnett White - Wheeler's nomination was therefore under less scrutiny.

As the head of the EPA, Pruitt presided over the substantial roll-back of environmental regulations, as well as the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords.

Mr Pruitt sparked controversy past year when he contradicted his own organisation's advice by saying he did not believe that carbon dioxide is a main contributor to global warming.

The news network reported Tuesday that Pruitt - who faces more than a dozen ethics and spending probes - appealed to Trump to make the change during an Oval Office meeting this spring.

The praise for Pruitt was far from universal. Wheeler spent 14 years working for Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, the most ardent climate science denier; he's also worked as a lobbyist for the coal industry, reports Mother Jones.

Mink, a schoolteacher and mother of a 2-year-old son, set social media ablaze earlier this week after she posted a video of her calmly asking Pruitt to resign while he was eating lunch at a Washington restaurant.

"We deserve to have somebody at the EPA who actually does protect our environment", she says to him in the video. As Pruitt's controversies grew in April, the Union on Concerned Scientists said it would have serious concerns if Wheeler were made EPA administrator. Wheeler was first rumored to be chosen for the EPA in March 2017. Here's what you need to know about Wheeler's background as he takes over the agency tasked with preserving the country's environment and natural resources. This differs from Pruitt, who drew attention not only for his aggressive moves to cut back regulations but also for mounting scandals and questions about potential ethics violations. Other names have been floated as possible Pruitt successors, including Donald Van der Vaart, a former environmental official in North Carolina.
