Scarlett Johansson responds to backlash after landing transgender role in new film

Johansson, for her part, chose to make matter worse by issuing a snide statement in response to criticism: "Tell them they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment". He died in 2003. Johansson also released a statement defending her decision to play the trans character, massage parlor owner Dante "Tex" Gill.

Johansson is fresh from her turn in the devastating Avengers Infinity War and was one of the last men or women left standing after The Snap.

Tambor himself seemed to say as much during his Golden Globes' acceptance speech for his role as Maura on Transparent: "Please give transgender talent a chance". In 2017, Sanders directed Johansson in Ghost in the Shell, an adaptation of the Japanese manga by the same name, which sparked accusations of whitewashing after Johansson, a white woman, played Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese character.

People are not being shy about calling out Johansson for playing a trans man since this can be considered her second offense when it comes to appropriating - in this case its not cultural, it's gender identity.

The news that yet another cisgender actor was set to take on a trans role was greeted with anger and disappointment by many - and Johansson appeared to pour fuel on the fire with her response.

"Gill was born Jean Marie Gill, and though it is unclear if he identified as transgender, The Hollywood Reporter noted that an obituary in his local newspaper reported Gill "[insisted] that she was a man".

I mean.at this rate she might?

Over the years, multiple cis actors have played trans characters, including Hilary Swank in 2000's Boys Don't Cry, Huffman in 2005's Transamerica and Leto in his Oscar-winning Dallas Buyer's Club role. Tambor won an Emmy for his role, Leto won an Oscar for his, and Huffman won a Golden Globe.

While some were negative, many others defended her choice to take it on.
