The group told local media the climber is not affiliated with them.

The seven people under arrest will face unlawful protest charges, Somma said.

A woman has climbed the bottom of the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

Liberty Island, where the statue is located, is being evacuated and all visitors are being taken off the island via ferry.

Park police and NYPD officers responded to the scene, where they used ladders to reach the base of the statue. The reports of the climber began around 3 p.m., not long after the "Abolish ICE" protest was underway. The demonstration was organized to protest the Trump administration's immigration policy, the group said in a press release.

The sign read, "Abolish I.C.E". ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is a division of the Department of Homeland Security whose officers arrest and deport unauthorized immigrants inside the U.S., among other duties. The protesters called for called deportations to be halted and all families to be united that were separated at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said the president's immigration policy is a step forward for public safety.

In February a year ago, protesters hung a giant "Refugees Welcome" banner across the Liberty statue's observation deck.
