Two workers shot at Kansas elementary school

A company called Turf Etc. was installing turf at the school, according to Kaci Brutto, district spokeswoman.

Overland Park Police are on the scene, responding to a shooting that took place at around 9 a.m.at Sunrise Elementary School, according to a report by local CBS affiliate KCTV.

But later Tuesday afternoon, as the suspect was being taken to the county jail, he tried to escape from a police vehicle in the area of 127th Street and Antioch Road.

Authorities say the two contractors, both men, were on the school's playground when they were shot. The shooting was the result of an argument between one worker and the two victims, police said.

Police are searching for the suspect. The carjack victim was unharmed.

Overland Park police spokesman Officer John Lacy says the shooting happened Tuesday at Sunrise Point Elementary School in the Blue Valley school district.

Multiple car-jacking attempts were reported in connection to the suspect in the shooting, one, unsuccessfully, at a vehicle wash near 151st Street and Metcalf Avenue and one successfully near 149th Street and Metcalf.

Police Chief Francis Donchez said the home where the suspect was arrested belonged to the owner of the SUV. The company has been used by the district about five years.
