World Cup Returning to US After North American Bid Beats Morocco

The U.S. last hosted World Cup games in 1996, Mexico last hosted in 1986 and Canada has never hosted men's World Cup matches.

He said the tournament had an opportunity to put football "on a new and sustainable path for generations to come".

Three cities on the West Coast were chosen as potential host sites for the 2026 World Cup: Seattle, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025.

In making its case to voting members, the North American bid accentuated the quantity and quality of available stadiums, experience in staging major events and the infrastructure necessary to transport and house tens of thousands of visiting fans. After the allegations of corruption, including around that voting, which later roiled Federation Internationale de Football Association and saw president Sepp Blatter eventually step down, the organization was hoping today's selection would be less contentious. "It should be based on the merits of the bid".

When Gianni Infantino replaced embattled Joseph "Sepp" Blatter as president of soccer's governing body in 2016, he acknowledged that the organization was "in a crisis" and promised reforms.

Delegates had been faced with a clear choice in the 2026 vote. In the end it wasn't enough, and Americans fans can look forward to the return of soccer's greatest event in what can only be seen as a massive boost for the domestic game. It follows controversy over the last World Cup vote in 2010, which handed the 2018 and 2022 tournaments to Russian Federation and Qatar, respectively, despite both bids' being weaker on paper than their rivals.

Wednesday's vote, conducted during the Fifa Congress at Moscow's expo centre, provided a much-needed victory for American football, which is in the process of rebuilding the men's programme in the wake of last fall's failure to qualify for this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.

Because they are all hosting, the Canada, U.S. and Mexico teams will all automatically qualify for the tournament. On a report issued two weeks ago, Morocco received 2.7 of a possible five points while North America earned four.

They warned "the amount of new infrastructure required for the Morocco 2026 bid to become reality can not be overstated".

The winning bid, also shared with Mexico and Canada, was announced early Wednesday.

The successful bid also comes as President Donald Trump is engaged in public feuds with the leaders of both those countries. Hasseltine said. "We want to make sure the legacy lives forever and lives long beyond the games' being here". South Africa staged the 2010 tournament.

The Moroccan bid had enlisted the support of the British communications agency that helped London and Paris land the 2012 and 2024 Olympics.

France, in particular, lobbied behind the scenes for French-speaking Morocco and the bid had the support of most African nations.

While Portland is known for its tremendous support of soccer, the city doesn't have a stadium that would support the attendance numbers expected for a World Cup game.

That vote prompted an overhaul of the rules.
