Ricciardo won in Monaco despite nursing an engine problem so terminal that his Red Bull boss Christian Horner likened it to the troubling Apollo 13 space mission.

"More of a passenger", Vettel said Saturday after earning his 54th career Formula One pole with the fastest lap ever on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Ricciardo's running was disrupted by electrical issues that kept him sidelined for much of FP2, the Aussie believing these to be caused by the need to configure the new-spec engine that Renault introduced in Canada.

Four-time champion German Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari was third ahead of current series leader and defending four-time champion Briton Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

The Red Bull driver said at a news conference Thursday before the Canadian Grand Prix that he's exhausted of questions about the crash in Azerbaijan that also knocked out teammate Daniel Ricciardo, or the one in Monaco that sent him to the back of the grid. I wasn't really happy with the auto. It is a blow for Ricciardo's title chances after he moved up to third, and within 38 points of Hamilton following his Monaco triumph. "Track fix required between Turns Four and Five", said a message from Race Control meaning a drain cover needed fixing between Casino Square and Mirabeau. "If we can escape this weekend without it, then I'd rather take it somewhere else".

Ricciardo's auto has spent more time in the garage than Verstappen's this weekend, but Ricciardo does not think he can use too much of that as an excuse for the gap to the Dutchman. "If we got in that mess around here on this circuit, it is not as bad as Monaco but it is still very hard to make much progress here".

Again, Kimi Raikkonen led the Ferrari charge in second place, but Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo, who missed a large chunk of FP2 as mechanics rushed to fix a mechanical problem, was able to end the day third.

"The others did a bit better but I'm not really bitter or anything at myself, I honestly did the best I could today".

"Starting on the hypersofts sets us up to be aggressive in attack, so should hopefully make for some good TV as well", Ricciardo said.

"Today was a good day, the vehicle is working very well".

Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo also had an interesting day.

"Obviously if something happened in practice, we'd probably have to take one". Team-mate Sainz put the back end of his auto into the wall early in the afternoon and managed just nine laps. The main thing was to get through the program, which we did. Fortunately the forecast looks good this year, with only partly cloudy skies predicted for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race. So qualifying we actually made really good progress.
