Valve Updates Steam Chat With New Friends List, Group Tools

Valve will be working with Perfect World Games, a Chinese partner, to make a version of Steam for China.

Robert H. Xiao, CEO of Perfect World said the company would introduce more games to China through Steam China, providing quality content and improving the experience for both gamers and developers.

Available now in the Steam client beta, Steam Chat offers the ability to chat with other users on Steam with either group or individual messaging - via both text and voice - as well offering a host of improvements to the client's friends list. Game developers will now have the option of including other information in list entries as well, such as where players are located in their game, or whether they're available for matchmaking. For those of you who still remember Myspace, the new friends list will also let you designate some friends as "favorites", so get ready to compete for that coveted status.

"Every chat on Steam is now multimedia friendly", Steam's page states, meaning you'll be able to share GIFs, videos from YouTube, audio from SoundCloud and more within the chat itself. That isn't a bad thing-Discord has become popular with many gamers because it's one of the best communications platforms out there-but it's hard not to think Valve took a little too much inspiration here. This keeps your IP address private, which masks your physical location and also prevents network attacks.

This Steam Chat update looks a lot like Discord, another gaming-centric chat platform which has been called the "Slack for gamers."
