Man dies and partner seriously injured after intruders attack their home overnight

Speaking this morning to Patricia Messinger on C103's Cork Today show, Ms Deryng said that Mikolaj's wife, Elizbieta, is undergoing surgery for the injuries she suffered in the attack. Another woman and Wilk's two children survived the attack.

The couple have two children under the age of six.

Police initially believed there were four men involved.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place this morning on the body of Mikolaj Wilk, a Polish man who was fatally assaulted in a house in Co. The injured parties were later taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. His partner, who is in her 30s and also from Poland, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Gardai have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. He included the wider community of Ballincollig in his address, saying that their thoughts were with Wilk's family and friends.

Police said Wilk died in the hospital, despite the efforts of all medical teams involved. They believe the vehicle was a BMW 3 series.

Gardai investigating the murder on Sunday said that after a technical examination of the BMW auto found in Iniskenny Ballinora, Waterfall, a firearm was recovered which will be sent for further tests.

The couple's home now remains sealed off in order for a forensic examination to take place.

Gardai, who have launched a murder inquiry, responded to the incident at 3.17am on Sunday.
