Kim Summit Produces High Hopes, Few Details

Kim Jong-un went with a plan, gave little and left with plenty: bolstered status and diplomatic leverage, lavish praise from the US president, the promise of an end to US-South Korean military drills - and, surely, a growing confidence that North Korea is doing well at this game.

The US has long held the view that North Korea's illegitimate military activities can't be traded away for its right to do legitimate military activities.

Beijing's participation in the penalties is a key to keeping them in play against Kim's regime. Trump warmly touched Kim's arm during the handshake.

Geng dismissed accusations from Trump that Beijing has been easing up on the sanctions, saying it is following United Nations sanctions "comprehensively, accurately and strictly".

The presidential Blue House said it needed "to find out the precise meaning or intentions" of Mr Trump's statement, while adding that it was willing to "explore various measures to help the talks move forward more smoothly".

Bruce Klingner, a North Korea expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said the denuclearization pledge in the Trump statement is "diluted from the six-party talks provision, and there was no mention of North Korea moving towards complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization, as the administration had hinted".

The Pentagon has reassured allies of its "ironclad" security commitments, after President Donald Trump cancelled its Korean military exercises.

All of this suggests that a wild-card president ― the last thing you want in the sensitive negotiation ― could have created serious problems, and not only for USA negotiators, who will now have to iron out the details with North Korea.

Trump had been scheduled to fly back to Washington tomorrow morning after spending today with Kim in Singapore, but on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8pm today after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated.

The president may have misunderstood the question, as he referred in his answer to his closed-door talks and a few carefully negotiated photo ops with Kim - not the US-made video that presented the totalitarian autocrat as a hero.

Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond". "Will the world embrace this change?" a male narrator can be heard asking the audience.

But in the past, Mr Trump has been far more critical of Mr Kim's human rights record, claiming the dictator is leading one of the most brutal regimes in the world.

Trump responded on Twitter, saying: 'The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the USA, say the haters & losers'.

The US would suspend "provocative" war games it holds with South Korea.

The Kim-Trump summit meeting centred on nuclear disarmament and reducing tensions concluded with a one-page agreement. The longtime property developer-turned-politician later mused about the potential value of condos on the country's beachfront real estate.

The formal document-signing, which also included an agreement to work to repatriate remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Korean War, followed a series of meetings at a luxury Singapore resort.

"At the end of the day, this is the last, best chance to end this conflict without a war", Graham added.
