Arsenal agree contract details with Serie A midfielder

Arsenal have agreed a £26.4m (€30m) deal to sign the Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira and were discussing personal terms with the Uruguayan's representatives in Milan on Tuesday.

Strengthening central midfield is a priority for the Gunners and the 22-year-old is seen as an ideal fit technically and at a reported £26m, would fall within their budget.

Torreira has a €25m (£22m) release clause at Sampdoria, which must be paid in full up until 60 days after the transfer is confirmed.

Ornstein also admitted that Sokratis Papastathopoulos had agreed a deal with Arsenal but will not be announced until July.

According to the Daily Mail, Unai Emery is planning to navigate around this potential issue by offering to pay the fee in regular instalments rather than in a lump sum.

Arsenal's head of recruitment Sven Mislintat had always been scouting for players in these areas even before Wenger left and there is now firm interest in Totteira, who is 22 and has a £22 million release clause. He has become a key player at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and is ranked among the best defensive midfielders in Serie A. He has one Uruguay cap and was included in Óscar Tabárez's World Cup squad for the tournament in Russian Federation this summer.
