Trump tweets that his top economic advisor suffered heart attack

The president's top economic adviser has suffered a heart attack, President Trump said. "He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center", Trump said on Twitter minutes before he was scheduled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Trump's choice of Kudlow to be his top economic aide elevated the influence of a longtime fixture on the business news network CNBC. The meeting was shadowed by the Trump administration's escalation of rhetoric on trade and tariffs and splintered shortly after the president left Quebec and tweeted he was pulling back his approval of a joint statement by the group.

Last week, Mr. Kudlow floated the possibility of dividing NAFTA talks and cutting separate bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico. As recently as Sunday, he had appeared on TV defending the president's attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying that Trudeau had committed a "betrayal". He replaced Gary Cohn, who resigned after losing his battle against imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Kudlow had worked as a White House budget aide in the Reagan administration, and had also been an informal advisor to the 2016 Trump campaign.

Kudlow, though only on the job since March, has become a popular figure in the White House who is known for gregarious and seasoned manner in an administration frequently riven by rivalries and disputes.
