Trump G7 tweets 'sobering and depressing': Merkel

Merkel, in the picture can be seen, staring down at US President Donald Trump while standing behind a table with both hands pressed firmly into its surface atop some documents.

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, Angela Merkel has some thoughts.

To Abe's left stands United States national security adviser John Bolton, the only one in the picture who looked as if he might have been in the middle of talking. Photographs from the Group of Seven summit provided by the German and American governments suggest contrasting images of their leaders.

U.S. President Donald Trump called earlier on Friday for Russian Federation to be brought back into the global grouping.

After all, during the summit, Trump had threatened to enact stiff penalties if other countries did not agree to dramatically reduce or end tariffs on American goods.

Before his departure to the Canadian summit on Friday, Trump told reporters that it would be right to revive the G8 format (G7 nations plus Russia), suspended in 2014.

Macron also tweeted Saturday a photo of the other leaders and aides surrounding Trump, who was one of just two people sitting. Trump said the tariffs are necessary for national security. "After a long day of work and very direct dialogue, we are actively seeking an ambitious agreement", an English translation of Macron's tweet reads.

"The leaders of the G7 has not discussed climate change and trade, which are the most sensitive" she said.

France and Canada spoke against it.

Earlier, Merkel said that at present, the return of Russian Federation to the G8 ("group of eight") is impossible, reminiscent of "Bagnet".
